Formation and Early Years
The Wakefield Concert Band, South Kingstown’s own community band, was formed in 1894. From its humble beginnings, the band has been a staple in the local music scene, bringing together musicians for performances that date back over a century. The band’s history is marked by its dedication to community involvement and musical excellence, evolving through various musicians and concerts since its inception.
The early years saw the band establishing itself as a key part of Rhode Island’s cultural landscape, performing at local events and fostering a love for music among residents.
Evolution and Growth
Over its more than 100-year history, the Wakefield Concert Band has evolved in countless ways. It consists of both amateurs and former professional musicians from South Kingstown and other parts of Rhode Island. The band has grown and thrived, adapting to changes in membership and musical styles while maintaining its community roots.

In 2016, the band held its ninth annual spring concert at South Kingstown High School, marking the first under a new conductor’s leadership. This transition highlighted the band’s ongoing commitment to fresh perspectives and continued performances.
Notable Performances
The Wakefield Concert Band has participated in numerous memorable events. In 2011, they provided a musical salute to Block Island’s 350th birthday, celebrating the smallest town in the smallest state.

In 2017, the band performed a concert featuring music once owned by the Spencer Orchestra, which entertained Rhode Island resort guests in earlier times. This event turned back the clock, offering audiences a glimpse into historical musical repertoires.
Current Status
Today, the Wakefield Concert Band continues to be a dedicated group of professional and serious amateur musicians, ranging from high school students to enthusiastic adults. They perform at various community events, upholding their tradition of musical contribution to South Kingstown and beyond.
